On the first day of the New Year, Bagonhons and visitors from other towns ans cities in Negros Occidental were treated to a fireworks display showcased with music from hit US television series Glee.

The 4th Lights of Bago attracted about 10,000 spectators who marvelled at the 20 – minute musical fireworks display at the Manuel Torres Memorial Sports Complex last January 1.

Multi-colored lights cascading from skies in synch with songs like “Don’t Stop Believing”, “Good Vibration”, Walking on Sunshine”, Time of My Life”, and “Light up the World”.

Vice Mayor Nicolas Yulo, the event chair for the 4th Lights of Bago, said that they wanted to make it a tradition, while also supporting the advocacy of the government on the proper use of firecrackers.

This is supported by Mayor Ramon Torres, who hopes that for 2012, Filipinos will all be family-oriented, bringing back the old family tradition and values.

A lantern flying activity at the Bantayan Park sponsored by the Lingkod Bata Foundationof first lady Ma. Mercedes Carmen Torres and a New Year’s Party at the park followed.

The idea of the musical fireworks show was initiated by Raymond Stoffel, a retired international corporate lawyer from Luxembourg.

Since its inception in 2009, the event has continued to draw in more and more crowd each year making the annual Lights of Bago the biggest event of Negros Island for the New Year. It has put Bago City on the map and has been a boost to local tourism.
